Always having been drawn to starfish I had to do this piece.
This handmade necklace features a 6 legged Starfish with a Druzy Quartz center (see Inspiration section for numerological meaning). Each leg holds a double terminated (pointed and facetedat each end) quartz crystal. Smaller crystals adorn the body of the Starfish capturing and reflecting light.
The backplate is hand cut and hammered copper with a patina and softly buffed surface.
Connected by chain are two symetrical teardrop polymer clay beads with Swarovski crystal inlays (numerological meaning of the number of crystals to follow). Hand stamped, stained and sealed front and back.
I distressed and hammered copper sheet into cone shaped ribbon end caps. Strung between the caps are hand dyed silk ribbon as well as silk sari ribbons upcycled from the cutting room floors in India. Linking them to teardrop beads are small pieces of tumbled Kyanite gemstone.
To finish off the necklace I made a clasp that has two holes for an adjustable length on the necklace. Covered in crystal and distressed copper wire this necklace is definitely for a sea goddess. I can picture her walking right up on the beach in all her beauty, wearing this with her silky dress and flowy seaweed clinging to her beautiful figure, whatever shape she takes…
Necklace length is measured from clasp end to clasp end.
The Starfish has been used to represent the Virgin Mary (Stella Maris which means Star of the Sea) who creates safe travel over troubled waters and is also seen as an emblem of salvation during trying times. The Starfish can also be seen as celestial symbol and as such, represents infinite divine love. In addition to love, the Starfish also holds characteristics such as guidance, vigilance, inspiration, brilliance and intuition. To see a starfish in your dream, suggests a period of healing and regeneration.
Alternatively, it may indicate that you have many options to weigh and decisions to make.
There are 5 small crystals that I purposely placed in the clay because 5 is the number of humanity. The number five symbolizes meditation; religion; versatility. It represents the five senses everywhere except in the East. In the East there are six—the extra being Mind. The sixth (large) Swarovski crystal also represents the Universe and connection to it.
